You control the decision
You have the right to decide whether to join. You may ask questions before signing, request more time, and decline without being pressured. If you enroll, you generally may withdraw at any time. The study team should explain whether any follow-up is recommended for safety and what happens to information already collected.
You deserve understandable information
Ask the team to explain unfamiliar words, procedures, probability statements, and alternatives. A consent form can be lengthy, but length does not replace conversation. Ask what is experimental, what is routine care, which activities are optional, and which are required for participation.
Who reviewed the study?
An institutional review board or ethics committee typically reviews research involving people. Ask how to contact that body if you have questions about your rights that you do not wish to direct to the study team.
What if I am injured or feel unwell?
Ask whom to contact, what immediate steps to take, what medical treatment is available, and how costs related to a research injury are handled. In an emergency, seek emergency care first.
How will my information be used?
Ask who can access identifiable information, whether data or specimens may be stored for future research, what choices you have, and what limits to confidentiality exist. Research privacy protections reduce risk but cannot eliminate every risk.
Costs, payment, and alternatives
Request a clear explanation of which visits, tests, medicines, or devices are paid by the study and which may be billed to you or insurance. Ask about travel reimbursement, participation payments, tax reporting, and how payment changes if you leave early. Compensation is not the same as a medical benefit.
Discuss reasonable alternatives with a licensed healthcare professional who knows your care. Alternatives may include approved treatment, another study, watchful waiting, supportive care, or no treatment, depending on your circumstances. PatientOra cannot decide among those choices for you.
